Coast Guard Academy to welcome new superintendent at ceremony on New London campus

NEW LONDON, Connecticut — The Coast Guard Academy is welcoming a new superintendent at a ceremony Monday on its New London campus.

The new leader, Rear Adm. James Rendon, served as assistant superintendent at the academy from 2010 to 2012 and more recently has been directing a task force charged with running counter-drug strategy in the Pacific.

He replaces Rear Adm. Sandra L. Stosz, the first female superintendent of any of the five U.S. service academies. Her new role will be deputy commandant for Coast Guard mission support.

Coast Guard Vice Commandant Peter Neffenger will preside over the change of command ceremony.

Cadets at the academy receive full scholarships and graduate with an obligation to serve five years in the Coast Guard.
