GARY, Indiana — Gary has gone a week without a homicide, following a stretch of two months during which the city saw 14 people killed.

The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1USCnos ) reports the last homicides took place late Aug. 10 and early Aug. 11, when two men were killed and another was hurt in two separate shootings. A man was wounded by gunfire Sunday.

The city has had 38 homicides so far this year, up from 22 at the same point a year ago. There were a total of 46 homicides in Gary last year and 55 in 2013.

Lake County Sheriff John Buncich says his department has increased patrols in Gary since getting $200,000 from the county council last week to pay officers overtime. Buncich says his department is also getting more anonymous tips.
