NYPD: Police shoot, kill man who lunged at officers while holding utility knife

NEW YORK — The New York Police Department says police officers responding to a complaint shot and killed a man who confronted them while holding a utility knife.

Authorities say officers were looking into a complaint Sunday morning that a man with a knife had threatened staff at a Queens hospital before fleeing. Police responding to the 911 call canvassed the area.

They saw a man matching the description on Kissena Boulevard. Officers approached on foot, and the man confronted one of the officers. Police say the officer fired twice, hitting the man once in the torso.

He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His identity has not been released.
