Bank robbery suspect dead after shootout with Manatee deputies; 1 deputy shot in right arm

BRADENTON, Florida — Authorities say a bank robbery suspect is dead following a shootout with Tampa Bay area deputies.

The Manatee County Sheriff's Office reports that the suspect robbed a Florida Bank branch in Sarasota shortly before noon Monday. Deputies spotted the suspect's white pick-up truck, and a chase followed. The truck finally stopped after the second time deputies used stop sticks.

As deputies approached the truck, authorities say the suspect began shooting and hit Lt. Bob Mealy in the right arm. Deputies returned fire. After the shooting stopped, SWAT team members approached the truck and found the suspect dead.

The sheriff's office reports that money was found in the truck, but it wasn't immediately confirmed to be from the bank robbery.

Mealy was expected to recover from his wound.
