PITTSBURGH — The mother of a mentally ill gunman is seeking to keep her emails to the deceased man shielded from public view.
Thirty-year-old John Shick was fatally shot by police after he killed a nurse and wounded five other people at Pittsburgh's Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. Attorneys for Susan Shick say the emails and her deposition in a civil lawsuit filed by one of the victims of the March 2012 shooting should be kept private.
Kathryn Leight was wounded while on duty at the clinic. She sued the gunman's estate last year, and later added claims against Susan Shick, doctors and other entities that treated the gunman.
Leight's attorney says Susan Shick knew her son was dangerous and did not fully disclose his violent history to physicians treating him.
