DEER PARK, New York — Suffolk County police say a 57-year-old woman has been arrested the fatal hit-and-run death of a pedestrian on New York's Long Island.

Irene Caldarero was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Police say she struck a woman crossing Deer Park Avenue at about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. She stopped briefly, but drove off before police arrived, authorities said. The victim has not been identified.

Witnesses gave a description of the vehicle. Authorities say they arrested the woman after they spotted her car. Caldarero was awaiting arraignment and wasn't clear if she had an attorney. Police are asking anyone with information to call their tips hotline at 800-220-TIPS.
