Fairmont closes bridge after DOH finds deficiencies, new span to be built in 2015

FAIRMONT, West Virginia — Fairmont officials have closed a city bridge following a state inspection that found deficiencies.

Media outlets report that the Division of Highways recommended the closure of the Fourth Street Bridge in a report submitted to the city on Monday.

City Manager Jay Rogers told the City Council on Tuesday that temporary barricades and barrels have been put in place to block access to the bridge. Concrete barriers and fending will be installed by the end of the week.

The DOH's report cited seven deficiencies. Most were structural issues.

DOH spokeswoman Carrie Bly says the city isn't required to close the bridge.

The city plans to replace the bridge in 2015.
