RALEIGH, North Carolina — Light snow is reported across the mountains of northwestern North Carolina.

The weather has prompted school officials to close classes in Alleghany, Avery, Mitchell and Watauga counties. Classes are starting later in Ashe County.

The National Weather Service said the combination of high winds and light snow is creating dangerous driving conditions.

Light snow was reported in Jefferson in Ashe County early Friday.
