NARUTO, Japan — Gamba Osaka won the J-League championship on Saturday after earning a point in a 0-0 draw with relegated Tokushima Vortis.

Gamba's draw coupled with Urawa Reds' 2-1 loss to Nagoya Grampus gave the Osaka-based team their second J-League title and first in nine years.

After the final whistle, Gamba's players had to wait several minutes for the result of the Urawa match to be be announced.

Gamba finished with 63 points, one ahead of Urawa.

Urawa took a 1-0 lead on Tomoaki Makino's goal in the second minute but second-half goals by Yusuke Muta and Kensuke Nagai dashed the home team's hopes of winning their second title.

Kashima Antlers, who had an outside shot at the title, were defeated 1-0 by Sagan Tosu to finish third in the standings on 60 points.
