Jurors hear closing statements in trial of man accused of planning Indianapolis home explosion

SOUTH BEND, Indiana — Jurors have heard closing statements from the state and defense in the trial of a man accused of planning a 2012 home explosion gutted an Indianapolis subdivision and killed a neighboring couple.

The jurors in South Bend also will hear a prosecution rebuttal to the defense statement Monday in the trial of Mark Leonard.

St. Joseph Superior Court Judge John Marnocha has told jurors they'll begin deliberating on Tuesday. Leonard faces 53 counts including murder, arson and conspiracy charges.

The jurors heard from more than 160 witnesses for the prosecution during the monthlong trial and just one witness for the defense last Thursday. One of Leonard's public defenders, Diane Black, has said her client only intended to start a small fire.
