Royals send struggling righty reliever Kelvin Herrera to minors

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The Kansas City Royals have sent struggling reliever Kelvin Herrera to the minors.

The right-hander allowed eight home runs in 20 1-3 innings. The Royals optioned him to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.

Herrera was 2-4 with a 4.87 ERA in 19 relief appearances. He went 4-3 with a 2.35 ERA in 76 relief appearances last year, giving up just four home runs in 84 1-3 innings as a rookie.

The Royals recalled right-hander Luis Coleman from Omaha, where he was 2-1 with a 1.04 ERA and three saves. He pitched parts of the past two seasons with Kansas City, going 1-4 with a 3.25 ERA and one save in 73 relief appearances.
