The head of the Asian Football Confederation is backing Sepp Blatter's bid for a fifth term as FIFA president.

The 78-year-old Blatter confirmed this week to executive committee colleagues — including AFC President Sheik Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa — that he will stand in the election next May.

"Mr. Blatter has decades' worth of experience in governing world football, therefore I have every confidence that he will continue to play an important role in its development," Sheik Salman of Bahrain said on the AFC website.

"Our growth in world football can also be credited to the dynamic relationship that the AFC has with FIFA under the guidance of Mr. Blatter," he added.

Former FIFA official Jerome Champagne is currently the only other declared challenger to Blatter, who has reversed a pledge made before the 2011 presidential poll to stand aside in 2015.

The Confederation of African Football backed Blatter's re-election bid last weekend.
