Officials: 57-year-old woman dies, 2 displaced in fire that ripped through Springfield home

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts — A 57-year-old woman died and two people were displaced after a fire tore through a Springfield home.

Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger says the blaze was reported by an off-duty firefighter who was driving by the St. James Boulevard home on Tuesday.

The firefighter made an unsuccessful attempt to enter the home.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at about 5:30 p.m.

Leger says they were able to remove the woman from the second level of the home. The woman, identified Wednesday as Debra Wellspeak, was taken to Baystate Medical Center where she died.

Two people escaped unhurt. The cause is under investigation.
