Authorities: Police shoot, kill 47-year-old man at his New Jersey home

LITTLE EGG HARBOR, New Jersey — Authorities say police shot and killed a man who confronted them with a knife at his southern New Jersey home.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says a concerned family member asked officers to check on 47-year-old Francis Hartnett because Hartnett was "possibly suicidal" and attempting to harm himself.

Authorities say officers gained entry to the Little Egg Harbor apartment on Tuesday morning and encountered Hartnett brandishing a knife. Multiple officers opened fire when they said Hartnett came toward them after he ignored their commands to drop the knife.

Hartnett was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say Hartnett suffered from depression and had previously tried to kill himself.

The shooting is under investigation.
