TROY, Michigan — A $6.3 million transportation center built after years of debate in suburban Detroit has officially opened.

The Detroit News reports a Tuesday morning ceremony took place at the Troy transit center. The facility will offer passenger rail service, regional bus routes and taxi services.

Amtrak officials say the center will be a major improvement for its service, including six daily trains between Pontiac and Chicago via Troy and Detroit.

Troy initially planned for the project in 2000 and approved a smaller version of the center in 2012.
