Ariz. Supreme court reduces Maricopa County prosecutor's suspension for ethics violations

PHOENIX — The Arizona Supreme Court has sliced a day off the suspension of Maricopa County prosecutor Rachel Alexander in an ethics case.

The court said in an opinion handed down Thursday that reducing Alexander's suspension to six months means she will be able to skip a more onerous process to become reinstated.

Alexander was sanctioned by a judicial panel for pressing criminal charges without probable cause against judges and county officials and filing a federal racketeering lawsuit that was judged frivolous.

She appealed her suspension to the state's high court, arguing that she was unaware that the racketeering lawsuit was frivolous and had relied on more experienced attorneys.

The court said it can't conclude that Alexander was motivated by political payback, but suggested she was trying to impress her boss, then-Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas.
