Los Lunas lawyer named by New Mexico governor to district court judgeship

Share/Save/Bookmark

SANTA FE, New Mexico — A Los Lunas lawyer has been appointed by Republican Gov. Susana Martinez to a judgeship on the 13th Judicial District Court in Valencia County.

Allen Smith fills a vacancy caused by the retirement of District Judge William Sanchez.

Smith has worked in a private law firm in Los Lunas since 2005, and for a decade before that was a prosecutor in the 6th Judicial District.

A judge, once appointed, must run for partisan election to keep the position. Once elected, a judge is subject to periodic nonpartisan elections in which voters decide a yes-no question whether to retain the judge.

Smith and another Republican are on the primary election ballot for the judgeship. Two Democrats also are running for the position.
