JOHANNESBURG — Oscar Pistorius' brother faces a charge of reckless or negligent driving for a road accident last year in which he was seriously injured, South African authorities said Thursday.

Prosecutors issued a summons to Carl Pistorius in late November and he is expected to appear in court this month, said Nathi Mncube, spokesman for South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority.

Carl Pistorius faces a charge of "reckless or negligent driving," Mncube said.

Pistorius suffered internal injuries and went into respiratory failure after the head-on collision on a highway on Aug. 1, but later recovered, a Pistorius family spokeswoman said last year.

His brother, Olympian Oscar Pistorius, was convicted of culpable homicide for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and sentenced to five years in jail. However, prosecutors are appealing the verdict against the double-amputee athlete in hopes of securing a murder conviction.

Oscar Pistorius had said he shot Steenkamp through a closed toilet door by mistake, thinking there was an intruder in his home. Prosecutors alleged he killed her intentionally after an argument.
