Judge appoints attorneys for inmate suspected of killing guard at northeastern Pa. prison

WILKES-BARRE, Pennsylvania — A judge has appointed attorneys for an inmate suspected of killing a corrections officer at a federal prison in northeastern Pennsylvania.

The Times-Leader reports (http://bit.ly/106WEru ) U.S. District Judge Yvette Kane has appointed attorneys James Swetz and Mark Fleming to represent Jessie Con-Ui, who hasn't been charged. The 36-year-old inmate has been moved to the federal Supermax prison in Colorado.

Officials say Con-Ui is the suspect in the Feb. 25 killing of Corrections Officer Eric Williams, who was working in a housing unit at the federal prison in Wayne County when an inmate using a homemade weapon attacked him.

Con-Ui had been jailed for his role in an Arizona drug-trafficking operation. He was scheduled to complete the sentence in September and would have been returned to Arizona to serve a life term for a 2002 murder.
