CHANDLER, Arizona — Authorities have arrested a Chandler man accused of malnourishing more than a dozen dogs.

KPHO-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1s0HIhl) that 41-year-old Rosario Angel Alvarado was taken into Chandler police custody Thursday on multiple charges of animal cruelty and neglect.

According to police, 13 adult pit bull-mix dogs and four puppies were discovered Aug. 27 inside his home.

The dogs had rashes and cuts and were covered in dirt, feces and urine. All 13 adult canines had to be euthanized.

Alvarado told police he tried to give up the dogs but he was told by his mother there was a $60 fee involved. He says he could not afford the fee.

Alvarado, who lives in the home with his mother and 10-year-old son, says the dogs didn't originally belong to him.
