N. Idaho family getting rabies shots after bat flies into home

BOISE, Idaho — A northern Idaho family is undergoing rabies shots after a rabid bat flew into their home.

Cynthia Taggart of the Panhandle Health District tells The Spokesman-Review (http://bit.ly/YVGsj0) in a story published Wednesday that there's no sign anyone was bitten.

But she says it's possible a bite can occur without a person knowing.

The residents of the home reported finding the bat lying on a staircase, and used a towel to pick it up and put it outside.

Instead of flying away the bat died, so the family sent it to be tested for rabies.

Rabies shots must start within 10 days of exposure and involve five shots over a couple weeks.

Taggart says no one has ever developed rabies who started the shots within 10 days of exposure.
