PHOENIX — A Glendale man who was impaired by marijuana use and driving without a license at the time of a fatal 2014 Phoenix freeway crash has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 20-year-old Robert Joseph Lopez was sentenced Tuesday. He had earlier pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated assault.
Authorities say 16-year-old Devonna Crouch was riding in Lopez's car and died in the Dec. 12, 2014 high-speed crash on Interstate 10 near the interchange with U.S. 60.
They say Lopez's vehicle ran into the median and struck a light pole.
Police investigators say Crouch died at the scene after her head struck a bolt on the light pole.
They later got a search warrant to draw Lopez's blood after he showed signs of impairment.
