SAN DIEGO — A former San Diego Navy officer who sexually abused children while making child pornography has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison.

Brandon Schroth was sentenced Tuesday by a federal judge who said his actions had placed his victims in "their own private jail, with no release date."

Prosecutors say the former physician's assistant went to Germany in 2010 where he produced child pornography of two girls, ages 9 and 11. He also was charged with taking sexually explicit photos of another 9-yeaar-old at his Mission Valley home.

Schroth was arrested in 2012. He pleaded guilty to sexually exploiting and abusing children.
