PORTLAND, Maine — A married couple who once lived in Windham have been sent to prison for stealing guns from a neighbor for whom they were serving as caretakers.

Theodore Thomes was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Portland to serve two years and three months in prison for possession of firearms by a felon.

His wife, Renee Thomes, was sentenced to 30 days in prison for illegally transferring firearms to an out-of-state resident.

Prosecutors say the Thomeses, who now live in the U.S. Virgin Islands, stole three handguns sometime before July 2, 2011.

Renee Thomes handed the guns over to a New Hampshire auctioneer, who sold them for a combined $11,000.

Both had previously pleaded guilty.
