3 arrested in Troy apartment fire that left 82-year-old woman dead; trio faces arson charges

TROY, New York — Police say they have made three arrests in an upstate New York apartment fire that led to the death of an 82-year-old woman.

Troy police said Friday that two men and one woman were arrested in North Carolina and are awaiting extradition to New York, where they will be charged with first-degree arson.

Grace Halpin died late last month at the hospital where she was being treated since the May 1 fire. Officials say she suffered a heart attack during the early-morning blaze in a building where more than two dozen other people lived.

Investigators say gasoline was used to set the fire. A video shows three people running from the burning building.

Police said the three suspects used to live in the area.

Officials did not provide a possible motive.
