Hiker plunges to death near water fall in popular trail area in Ventura County

VENTURA, California — A hiker has died after plunging more than 50 feet near a waterfall in Ventura County.

County fire Capt. Mike Lindbery says the male hiker fell in the Rose Falls area north of Ojai (OH-hi) on Tuesday afternoon.

Lindbery tells the Ventura County Star ( ) that the falls area in the Los Padres National Forest is a common destination for hikers, and also a common place for them to fall. But he says fatalities there are rare.

A paramedic who flew to the spot in a sheriff's helicopter declared the hiker dead at the scene.

No further details have been released on the hiker's identity.
