LOWVILLE, New York — State Police are investigating a fatal snowmobile accident on the snowy Tug Hill Plateau.

Troopers say 23-year-old Christopher Hawkes of Camden, New York, died Wednesday evening after his snowmobile struck a slight hill in the Town of West Turin in Lewis County. That sent Hawkes hurtling over the handle bars in front of the machine, and he was then struck in the head by the snowmobile. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It's the second fatal snowmobile crash reported in the region in the past two weeks. A 32-year-old man, also from central New York, lost control of his snowmobile and hit a tree in the Town of Inlet in the southern Adirondack Mountains, about 30 miles northeast of Turin. The victim also was pronounced dead at the scene.
