Woman, 37, dies in fire at western New York apartment complex; cause being investigated

CUBA, New York — Authorities say an early morning fire that broke out at a western New York apartment complex has claimed the life of a 37-year-old woman.

Police tell local media the fire was reported shortly after a 1 a.m. Saturday at a complex in the rural Allegany County town of Cuba, 65 miles southeast of Buffalo.

When emergency crews arrived, they found an upper apartment in flames. Officials say Shannon Pepper was found dead inside her apartment. An autopsy determined the cause of death was smoke inhalation.

Police tell the Times Herald of Olean that they don't believe foul play was involved.

Several other people living in the 48-unit complex were displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
