Former nursing home employees sentenced in death of patient who required ventilator

ALBANY, New York — Authorities say two respiratory therapists and three nurses have been sentenced for their roles in the death of a 72-year-old nursing home patient and subsequent cover-up on eastern Long Island.

New York's attorney general says all five are former employees of the Medford Multicare Center for Living and were found guilty at trials in July in Suffolk County.

They were among nine accused in the October 2012 death of Aurelia Rios of Central Islip.

Authorities say Rios died after a respiratory therapist failed to attach her to a ventilator when she went to sleep for the night.

Justice John Collins sentenced Kethlie Joseph to nine months in jail and three years of probation for criminally negligent homicide and failing to report the death as a result of neglect.
