ASHBURN, Virginia — The Washington Redskins have promoted receiver Nick Williams from the practice squad to the active roster and placed running back Chris Thompson on injured reserve.
Williams is an undrafted rookie from Connecticut who spent training camp with the Redskins. He's a possible answer in the team's ongoing search for a punt returner, a position that has been lacking since Richard Crawford was lost to a knee injury in preseason.
Fifth-round draft pick Thompson held the return duties early this season, but he hasn't played since Week 4 and needs surgery on his left shoulder.
The Redskins also signed running back Davin Meggett to the practice squad. He is the son of Dave Meggett, who played in the NFL from 1989-98.
