Pre-release walkaway suspected in Billings shooting death pleads not guilty


BILLINGS, Montana — A pre-release center walkaway who is accused of shooting a woman in the head and firing a shot near a 14-year-old boy has pleaded not guilty.

The Billings Gazette reports ( ) that 31-year-old John Edward Szydlowski appeared in Yellowstone County District Court Thursday where he was charged with felony deliberate homicide. He had previously been charged with four other felonies including escape, two counts of assault with a weapon, and criminal endangerment.

Prosecutors say he walked into a residence on March 22, pointed a gun at the head of the 14-year-old boy and fired a shot that missed him.

He was arrested the same day on suspicion of assault with a weapon in the shooting of 22-year-old Kayla Kinder. She died the next day.
