5 Californians win prestigious Rhodes scholarships for study at England's Oxford University

LOS ANGELES — Five college students from California have won prestigious Rhodes scholarships.

The Rhodes Trust announced the 32 new U.S. recipients this weekend.

The two Northern California winners include Rachel Skokowski, a French major at Princeton University. The other is Elliot Akama-Garren, now a biology major at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The three Southern California recipients include Benjamin D. Sprung-Keyser of Los Angeles, a senior studying economics at Harvard University.

The others are David R.K. Adler and Sarah E. Yerima.

Adler, who lives in the Encino section of Los Angeles, graduated with highest honors from Brown University in May.

Yerima, also from Los Angeles, is a senior sociology major at Princeton.

The Rhodes Scholars program, established in 1902, provides funding for multiple years of study at England's Oxford University.
