ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys expressed concern that cornerback Morris Claiborne's left knee injury could be serious.

Owner Jerry Jones and coach Jason Garrett both said Sunday night that they were worried about Claiborne after he was hurt in the first quarter of a 38-17 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

"It doesn't look good right now. I hope we have a surprise for us in the morning," Jones said. "We simply examined it. But the initial examination was not encouraging."

Garrett said an MRI was likely Monday.

Cowboys linebacker Bruce Carter left the game with what Garrett described as a some kind of quad pull, but didn't sound too concerned about that.

Saints starting left tackle Terron Armstead left because of a concussion in the first half, and didn't return.

Claiborne's injury came days after the sixth overall pick in the 2012 draft skipped a meeting and short walkthrough upon finding out he wouldn't start.

After leaving the facility Tuesday, he was back at practice Wednesday.

Because of the defensive formation, Claiborne was actually on the field for the first defensive play Sunday night. He came off on the second play.

Claiborne was later down on the ground away from the ball after a play with about 6 minutes left in the first quarter. He was helped off the field by people on both sides of him.

Carter got hurt while chasing Khiry Robinson down the sideline on a 62-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Carter fell down after pursuing the runner, and stayed down on the ground for several moments before being helped off the field.
