Officials light up state Capitol Christmas tree display; featured blue spruce came from Baltic

PIERRE, South Dakota — Gov. Dennis Daugaard says there's no better way to start the holiday season.

Hundreds of people were on hand as officials on Tuesday lit up the state Christmas tree display in the Capitol in Pierre.

A 29-foot-tall Colorado blue spruce that came from Baltic is the featured tree. It was donated by Willette Reichert.

There are more than 100 other trees decking the halls of South Dakota government for the holiday season. They're decorated by businesses, civic organizations and nonprofits from around the state. This year's theme is "Christmas Around the World."

The holiday display runs from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day through Dec. 26.
