San Antonio businessman pleads guilty to bribery in ongoing Maverick County corruption case

DEL RIO, Texas — A San Antonio businessman has pleaded guilty to bribery in a bribery, kickback and bid-rigging scheme involving officials of a South Texas border county.

German Garcia Cano faces up to 10 years in federal prison after admitting in federal court in Del Rio on Thursday to receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars from Maverick County. He admitted paying bribes to two county employees to ensure that he received contracts for leasing heavy equipment used in county construction projects between 2009 and 2012.

Cano is the 16th defendant convicted in an ongoing investigation of corruption in Maverick County government.
