Longtime trustee of NYC elite prep school stripped of emeritus title

NEW YORK — A longtime board member accused of quieting allegations of sexual abuse at an elite New York City prep school has been stripped of his title of emeritus trustee.

The Daily News (http://nydn.us/1003LGS ) says Michael Hess' name also was removed from the Horace Mann School website last week.

He's a former federal prosecutor who graduated from the school in 1958.

The News says when reached last week Hess denied any role in the sexual abuse scandal.

It says Hess didn't attend an alumni dinner Saturday at the Waldorf Astoria after outraged abused victims complained to the school.

Hess was one of nine emeritus trustees who were on the board in 1993 when complaints surfaced against a popular music teacher.

The Bronx district attorney has launched a probe into the alleged abuse.
