San Bernardino officer who was shot returns home after nearly 5 months

SAN BERNARDINO, California — A San Bernardino police officer has gone home nearly five months after he was critically wounded in a shooting

Chief Jarrod Berguan tweeted Friday that Officer Gabriel Garcia has gone home with family. Berguan says Garcia will continue therapy but his progress is great. The chief posted pictures of Garcia sitting in his car and posing in front of his parents' house.

The 31-year-old suffered brain injuries and had several surgeries after the August shooting. He spent several months in the hospital and most recently lived at a rehabilitation center.

Garcia's father, Capt. Ron Garcia, retired from the police force in December to care for him.

Three people have been charged with attempted murder in Garcia's shooting, though authorities say his partner killed the man who pulled the trigger.
