Yuma man sentenced to more than 7 years in federal prison in methamphetamine trafficking case

PHOENIX — A Yuma man has been sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison in a methamphetamine trafficking case.

Federal prosecutors say 58-year-old Roberto Benjamin Chavez received an 87-month prison term Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Phoenix.

Chavez had previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute methamphetamine.

According to a plea agreement, Chavez was involved in a meth distribution ring between September 2010 and April 2011.

Prosecutors say Chavez purchased methamphetamine from Mexican-based drug suppliers who smuggled the drug across the border into Arizona.

They say Chavez sold a combined total of 1 pound of methamphetamine in four separate deals that were monitored by law enforcement officials. That led to his arrest.
