COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — A judge has delayed a plea and sentencing hearing for a western Iowa man accused of trying to kidnap a 10-year-old girl near an elementary school.

Judge Timothy O'Grady on Thursday said he was concerned about the competency of 20-year-old Nathan Busse, who had trouble answering questions about whether he understood what was going on at the hearing.

Officials say Busse was scheduled to plead guilty to child stealing. He was charged with child stealing, kidnapping and other crimes after he was arrested in January 2013. Council Bluffs police say Busse had grabbed the girl and forced her to walk with him. She struggled with Busse and broke away.

Prosecution and defense lawyers said they'll discuss whether to continue working on a plea deal or take the case to trial.
