Suicide or police gunfire kills gunman in standoff with officers in Santa Ana

SANTA ANA, California — A man who shot at someone and then fled in a pickup truck has died in a standoff with Santa Ana police — but it's unclear whether officers shot him or he killed himself.

Police tell the Orange County Register ( ) that the man shot at and missed another man during a fight over a woman Wednesday afternoon.

Officers were told the gunman fled in a white pickup, which was spotted and chased down.

He could be seen inside the truck and ignored repeated orders to drop the gun.

Cpl. Anthony Bertagna says the standoff ended when the man shot himself under the chin and got out of the car while carrying the gun. Officers then opened fire.

The man died at a hospital.
