SAN BERNARDINO, California — Authorities say San Bernardino police officers shot and killed a suspect who led them on a chase and then fought with them after trying to break into a motel room.

The Sun newspaper says (http://bit.ly/1pwzbOb) officers were dispatched to the Economy Inn shortly before 2 a.m. Friday following reports of a man attempting to get into a room that wasn't his.

Lt. Paul Williams says the man immediately began struggling with officers before running off.

Williams says after officers caught the suspect he began fighting them and tried to grab one of their weapons. Williams says one of the officers opened fire, striking the man.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been identified.

The newspaper says homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.
