NH Senate panel backs 4-cent gas, diesel tax hike in deal to finish Interstate 93 expansion

CONCORD, New Hampshire — New Hampshire's Senate Finance Committee is backing a 4-cent hike in the tax on gas and diesel in a deal to finish the expansion of Interstate 93.

The full Senate will vote on the revised bill next week. Sen. Nancy Stiles said Thursday the proposal would provide more money over the next two years for highway improvements, then take some of the tax proceeds to pay off $200 million in borrowing toward finishing the I-93 project.

She said once the borrowing was paid off, the tax increase would be repealed. She said the Senate committee worked with the House Public Works Committee on the proposal, which also includes borrowing money to replace the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge between Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine.

The bill also would eliminate tolls in Merrimack.
