South Pointe beats Hartsville 21-7 for 3A title; Stallions have won 3 state titles in 9 years

COLUMBIA, South Carolina — Greg Ruff threw three touchdown passes to lead South Pointe to its third state championship in nine years of playing varsity football with a 21-7 victory over Hartsville in the Class 3A title game Saturday.

The Stallions (12-3) also won titles in 2008 and 2011. They finished as runner-up in 2010.

Ruff threw scoring passes of a pair of 12-yard TD passes to Quay Brown and a 17-yard fourth quarter strike to Josh Wilkes. Ruff finished 13-of-18 for 154 yards.

South Pointe had a 14-0 lead at the half.

Hartsville (14-1) got within a score late in the third quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by Brian Rivers, who had 75 yards on 14 carries. The Stallions answered quickly with the 17-yard TD pass from Ruff to Wilkes to seal it.

South Pointe limited the Red Foxes to 210 yards of total offense, including 75 yards in the first half.
