Baton Rouge mother indicted on second-degree murder charge in death of 2-year-old daughter


BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — A 22-year-old Baton Rouge woman who police say admitted to shoving her 2-year-old daughter against a shower wall has been indicted on a second-degree murder charge in the child's Dec. 29 death.

The Advocate reports ( the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office ruled the death of Da'Laijah Smith a homicide after finding she died of severe blunt-force injuries to her head, neck, chest and stomach.

Candice Smith faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.

Baton Rouge state court records do not indicate Smith has hired a lawyer.
