80 acres at center of alleged kickback scheme with former SC State officials up for auction

ORANGEBURG, South Carolina — Land at the center of an alleged kickback scheme involving former South Carolina State University officials is up for auction.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported (bit.ly/18RuJAV) that the 80-acre Sportsman's Retreat goes up for auction May 18.

Florida developer Richard Zahn pleaded guilty in federal court in February to conspiring to commit fraud during the attempted sale of his property to the Orangeburg university. Authorities say he offered former South Carolina State Board of Trustees Chairman Jonathan Pinson gifts in return for help in selling the property to the university. Pinson has pleaded not guilty.

Zahn is out on $100,000 personal recognizance bond. He faces up to five years in prison when he's sentenced.
