Portland police: Falling officer shot attacker who was swinging 3-foot crowbar at him

Share/Save/Bookmark

PORTLAND, Oregon — Portland police say a 15-year veteran of the force fell backward as a man came at him swinging a 3-foot crowbar, and the officer shot and killed the attacker.

The police identified the officer Friday as Robert Brown.

He was one of two officers police said tried to question 23-year-old Nicholas Glendon Davis about an assault reported Thursday on the Springwater Corridor Trail.

The police said in a statement Friday that Davis attacked without provocation and continued swinging as Brown fell. An autopsy determined Davis was hit in the chest.

Police said he appeared to be living along the bicycle and pedestrian path in the southeast corner of the city. Many transient and homeless people camp there.

The case is to be reviewed by a grand jury.
