LOS ANGELES — A 22-year-old Los Angeles man has been arrested on suspicion of torturing and killing his mother, who was visiting the U.S. from Taiwan.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's office said Wednesday that Chen Chao Ming faces one count of capital murder with the allegation that the killing involved torture.

The body of Yi Tung Weng was found Sunday night in Ming's apartment.

Prosecutors say the 48-year-old woman died of asphyxiation.

Ming could also face one count of animal cruelty for allegedly tossing his cat out of a window

Ming is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 25 and is being held without bail. Prosecutors have not decided whether to seek the death penalty.

It's not immediately known if he has a lawyer.
