State lifts quarantine of raw milk from Organic Pastures in Fresno County after tests passed

FRESNO, Calif. — A raw milk dairy in Fresno County is free to sell its products again after the state lifted a quarantine that started more than a week ago.

The quarantine and recall on May 10 covered raw milk, cream and butter produced by Organic Pastures. It was in response to the detection of campylobacter bacteria in six test samples of the products and in four samples of manure from the milking herd.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture reported receiving complaints of several illnesses. The bacteria can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever.

The facility had to pass sanitation tests to resume sales to the public.

Raw milk is not pasteurized. People who drink it believe it has health benefits.

It was the second recall of Organic Pastures products in six months.
