FEMA to help pay for repairs at historic Virginia home damaged by earthquake

STEVENSBURG, Va. — A foundation working to repair earthquake damage at a historic home in Culpeper County is getting help from the federal government.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has agreed to provide nearly $750,000 to help pay for repairs to Salubria. The Germanna Foundation will have to raise $250,000 for the repairs, which will cost $1 million.

Architectural historian Doug Harnsberger tells The Free Lance-Star (http://bit.ly/JBjXrX ) that the earthquake damaged two chimneys. Bricks that fell off the chimneys damaged eight rafters in the attic.

Foundation executive director Karen Quanbeck says the repairs are expected to be completed around June 1.

The foundation also plans to put a new shingled roof on house.

The 1757 Georgian-style house was built for the widow of Colonial Gov. Alexander Spotswood.
