East Mesa justice of the peace accused of shoplifting $40 speaker from store resigns from job

PHOENIX — An East Mesa justice of the peace accused of shoplifting has resigned from the bench.

Judge Mark Chiles sent a letter to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors saying his resignation was effective Wednesday and he cites medical problems for his decision.

The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/14WRKpu) says Chiles was cited April 3 by Mesa police on a misdemeanor shoplifting charge.

He allegedly stole a $40 speaker from a Walmart store near his court.

An undercover security officer at the store reported seeing Chiles leave the store without paying for the speaker.

County Supervisor Steve Chucri represents east Mesa and will recommend a replacement for Chiles to the full board, which will vote on the appointment.

The appointee must be a Republican like Chiles and also must live in the district.
